Salopettes
Salopettes are also known as ski pants. They are a two piece garment comprised of trousers and a ski jacket. The ski pants are waterproof and padded. They usually reach to the chest. There are straps going up to the shoulders. This term is only used for the two-piece suits. The one piece ski suit is referred to as a jumpsuit.
Available Styles
There are three styles you can choose from. The basic ski pants are worn like a trouser. You can adjust the waistband. This feature will be very useful when you have numerous clothes on.
Ski pants with bib are the most popular as they provide the utmost protection against the elements. These are available in different styles, many with suspenders.
Fabrics
There are many fabrics to choose from, including nylon and polyester. These are both good choices as they are strong and able to withstand different types of weather. Even better are ski pants made of microfilm. They are resistant to weather and light. While the weight is lighter, the price tends to be higher.
If you will be skiing in rough weather, down ski pants are the best option. The top layers (comprised of the jacket and pants) must have insulation and coverage.
Insulation
This is another factor that must be considered by anyone who wants to buy salopettes. For spring skiing, this may not be too important. Assuming you are not buying non-insulation pants, pick one that is still breathable and waterproof. For skiing in cold weather, maximum insulation is necessary.
Other Features to Consider
Look for suits with big zips. This will make it easier to adjust the suits when you have the gloves on. For the best air flow, buy pants equipped with zips at the sides. You should also look for pants with big pockets so you can put in your wallet and other stuff.
Fitting Issues
The pants must permit freedom of movement. That being said, the pants shouldn’t be too large you will fall over the place. You should also look for pants with sealed bottom seams. This will shelter you from snow.
However make sure the pants you get are not too hot; some pants with sealed seams get overly warm. If you would rather have an open leg, look for a gaiter. The gaiter is a fabric connected to the interior of the pants. This goes beyond the foot, so the snow doesn’t get into the pants.
There are also ski pants with extra fabrics at the knees and the seat section. This will give your body more protection.
Tips for Buyers
The prices of these ski pants vary widely. You can look for discounted ski pants in sports shops. These are also available on the Internet. You can also ask for recommendations from other fellow skiers.
If you are going to buy salopettes, you must take all the abovementioned factors into account. It will make your skiing experience not just enjoyable, but also keep you from getting cold or injured.
